Kylian Mbappe scored twice in the second-half as France beat Argentina 4-3 in the last 16 of the ongoing 2018 World Cup.
In heavyweight contest in Kazan that will go down as one of the World Cup classics, Antoine Griezmann converted from the spot to put France ahead after 13 minutes following a blistering run by Mbappe.
Griezmann struck the post from a free-kick moments later and it looked to be a one-sided contest for much of the first-half with Argentina lacking the cutting edge in attack.
But with half-time approaching, the South Americans drew level after Angel di Maria let fly from 30 yards to beat a stunned Hugo Lloris.
The Argentines began the second-half stronger and took the lead in fortuitous circumstances in the 48th minute when Lionel Messi’s shot from the inside the area took a ricochet off Gabriel Mercado’s foot.
Their lead lasted only nine minutes however as France restored parity courtesy of a delightful strike from right-back Benjamin Pavard.
And seven minutes later, man-of-the-match Mbappe shot the French ahead with a crisp left-foot shot after a smart turn to evade his marker.
The teenager gave the French breathing space with his second strike and third of the tournament with a neat finish off a sizzling counter.
Argentina looked beaten from then on, but the game sprung another surprise when Messi’s 40 yard pass was nodded in by substitute Aguero in the second minute of stoppage time.
It was too little too late for Argentina, whose stuttering campaign came to a rip-roaring end Kazan.
